The wheel unit brake shoe spreader AL-KO 1637 (inner drum diameter 160 mm, e.g. 900 kg axle B850-5) is used to transfer force from the brake cable to the shoe. The eye of the clutch of the cable line and spacer is threaded onto the lever of the spreader wrench and the brake cable stop is then threaded into the cut-out of this clutch. Pulling on the brake cable then causes the spacer to open and the brake shoes in the drum to open.

In order for the spacer to function properly, it is essential that its operation is completely free and that the opening is not obstructed by any debris. We recommend that you do not lubricate the spacer, or use only a very thin film of a lubricating hand with high temperature resistance, and only in the area of the joint. When unsuitable grease is used in large quantities, dirt and dust from worn lining adheres to the grease and the spacer becomes blocked very quickly.
