The 145 R12C 86/84N size is a compact 12" commercial tyre with different load indices for single and twin-wheel fitment. What does 86/84N mean?

The two values 86/84 indicate different tyre load capacities depending on the type of fitment. In single fitment, load index 86 applies, corresponding to a load capacity of 530 kg per tyre. In twin-wheel fitment, load index 84 applies, corresponding to a load capacity of 500 kg per tyre.

A pair of tyres in twin-wheel fitment therefore provides a nominal tyre load capacity of 1,000 kg. However, the actual permissible load of the vehicle or trailer is always also limited by the load capacities of the rims, axles and chassis, as well as the homologated weights of the specific trailer.

Speed rating N corresponds to a maximum tyre design speed of 140 km/h.

Reinforced 8PR construction

The C designation in 145 R12C identifies a tyre designed for commercial use and higher loads. The 8PR rating indicates the strength category of the tyre construction. Thanks to its construction, the MAXXIS UE-168 is suitable for applications where high load capacity, durability and reliability under load are important.

Ideal for Z-TRAILER twin-wheel applications

The MAXXIS UE-168 145 R12C 86/84N tyre is also used on Z-TRAILER car transporter trailers with twin wheels. In this configuration, two tyres are positioned side by side on each side of the axle.

A twin-axle car transporter with twin wheels therefore uses a total of 8 tyres. With an even load distribution, the trailer weight is distributed across significantly more tyres than with a conventional four-wheel configuration. The result is a large reserve in tyre load capacity and exceptionally stable handling of the loaded car transporter.

In twin-wheel fitment, the load capacity of each tyre according to index 84 = 500 kg, giving 1,000 kg per pair of tyres. On a twin-axle configuration with eight tyres, the combined nominal tyre load capacity is therefore 4,000 kg. This figure represents only the sum of the nominal load capacities of the tyres and does not determine the permissible gross weight or payload of the trailer.

Correct tyre pressure is essential

Correct tyre pressure is particularly important on heavily loaded trailers. A maximum tyre pressure of 4.33 bar / 65 PSI is specified for the MAXXIS UE-168 145 R12C 86/84N. However, this is not a universal recommended operating pressure for every trailer – the specifications of the particular trailer or vehicle manufacturer and the information marked on the tyre must always be observed.

With twin-wheel fitment, it is especially important to maintain the correct and equal pressure in both tyres of each pair. Different pressures alter their effective rolling dimensions and can cause uneven load distribution, uneven tyre wear and overloading of one of the tyres.

We recommend checking tyre pressures regularly when the tyres are cold, particularly before driving with a heavily loaded trailer.
