Three-Axle Aluminium Car Transport Trailers GROMEX

GROMEX three-axle aluminium car transport trailers provide a professional solution for transporting heavy passenger cars, electric vehicles, SUVs, pickup trucks, light commercial vehicles, motorhomes and even two vehicles on a single trailer. All four carefully selected models feature a maximum authorised mass of 3,500 kg, three braked AL-KO axles and an outstanding ratio of unladen weight to payload capacity. Their all-aluminium construction, massive C-section longitudinal beams and fully perforated loading deck provide excellent rigidity, stability and durability in professional use. At PKtechnik Trailers, we select our car transport trailers based on more than 20 years of experience and over 1,000 GROMEX trailers sold. Rather than offering an unnecessary range of similar dimensions, we focus on four carefully chosen models: the L5.2 with a payload of up to 2,940 kg, the versatile L6.1 × 2.1 for long commercial vehicles, the wider L6.1 × 2.2 for large pickup trucks and motorhomes, and the L8.5 × 2.1 for transporting two vehicles. Our philosophy is simple: every centimetre of trailer length and width must serve a practical purpose. An unnecessarily large trailer means more unladen weight and less available payload, which is particularly important when transporting heavy vehicles. All GROMEX car transport trailers are certified to VDI 2700 Blatt 8.1. We also offer axle shock absorbers, rear support legs, front crossover ramps, winches and other professional accessories. GROMEX Three-Axle Aluminium Car Transport Trailers – Professional Vehicle Transport up to 3,500 kg
GROMEX three-axle aluminium car transport trailers are designed for professional transportation of heavy passenger cars, electric vehicles, SUVs, light commercial vehicles, large pickup trucks, motorhomes and even two vehicles on a single trailer. With three braked AL-KO axles, lightweight all-aluminium construction and a low loading deck, they offer an excellent balance of unladen weight, payload capacity, towing stability and long-term reliability.
At PKtechnik Trailers, we have specialised in car transport trailers for more than 20 years. During this time, we have sold thousands of trailers, including over 1,000 GROMEX trailers. Based on our practical experience and the needs of professional vehicle transport operators, we commission four carefully selected three-axle models with a maximum authorised mass of 3,500 kg. Their common objective is to maximise payload capacity while maintaining optimal dimensions and excellent structural rigidity.
Why Is the Longest and Widest Car Transport Trailer Not Always the Best Choice?
A larger loading deck does not automatically make a better car transporter. Every additional centimetre of length or width generally increases the weight of the structure. With the maximum authorised mass remaining at 3,500 kg, this additional weight directly reduces the available payload. When transporting heavy commercial vehicles, pickup trucks and motorhomes, every kilogram can matter.
We therefore recommend choosing a car transport trailer according to the actual dimensions, wheelbase, weight and load distribution of the vehicles being transported, rather than simply their overall body length. A correctly sized loading deck makes better use of the available payload and improves manoeuvrability in everyday operation.
GROMEX L5.2 – Maximum Payload up to 2,940 kg
The GROMEX L5.2 is the lightest three-axle car transport trailer in our range. With a loading deck measuring 5,200 × 2,110 mm, an unladen weight of just 560 kg and a maximum authorised mass of 3,500 kg, it offers an exceptional payload capacity of up to 2,940 kg.
Although its loading deck is 5.2 metres long, this model may also be suitable for transporting certain commercial vehicles with an overall length of approximately 6.5 metres. The decisive factors are the vehicle's wheelbase, wheel position, weight distribution and permitted body overhang. With appropriate positioning, the front of the transported vehicle may extend over the trailer drawbar, provided sufficient clearance is maintained for safe turning and manoeuvring of the towing combination.
It is therefore not always necessary to purchase a longer and heavier car transporter simply because of the overall length of the vehicle being carried. The L5.2 offers the highest payload capacity of all three-axle GROMEX models in our range.
Another advantage is the ability to secure loads not only through the perforated loading deck but also around the side edges of the loading platform. On longer three-axle GROMEX models, this securing method is not used for structural reasons, helping to avoid unnecessary weakening of the extended trailer construction.
GROMEX L6.1 × 2.1 – The Optimal Car Transport Trailer for Commercial Vehicles
The GROMEX L6.1 × 2.1 is a versatile solution for transporting commercial vehicles, including vehicles with curtain-sided bodies or twin rear wheels. Its loading deck measures 6,055 × 2,110 mm, its unladen weight is only 600 kg and its payload capacity reaches up to 2,900 kg.
In our experience, most commercial vehicles do not require a loading deck measuring 6.5 metres or more. An unnecessarily long structure adds unladen weight, reduces payload capacity and makes manoeuvring more difficult without delivering a corresponding practical benefit.
A loading width of 2,110 mm is also sufficient for the vast majority of commercial vehicles, including many models with twin rear wheels. We therefore consider the GROMEX L6.1 × 2.1 an exceptionally well-balanced car transport trailer for professional commercial vehicle transportation.
GROMEX L6.1 × 2.2 – Wider Version for Large Pickup Trucks and Motorhomes
The GROMEX L6.1 × 2.2 is a wider version with a loading deck measuring 6,055 × 2,200 mm. It is particularly suitable for large American pickup trucks, such as RAM models, and larger motorhomes. For these vehicles, the actual track width, tyre width and wheel positioning on the loading deck must be checked carefully.
Although its loading deck is 90 mm wider than that of the standard L6.1 × 2.1, its unladen weight according to the Certificate of Conformity (COC) is only 610 kg. With a maximum authorised mass of 3,500 kg, this provides a payload capacity of up to 2,890 kg.
The additional loading width therefore increases the unladen weight by just 10 kg. Maintaining a high payload capacity is particularly important when transporting heavy pickup trucks and motorhomes. We therefore recommend the wider version primarily to customers who genuinely need the additional width.
GROMEX L8.5 × 2.1 – Professional Car Transport Trailer for Two Vehicles
The GROMEX L8.5 × 2.1 is designed for professional transportation of two passenger cars on a single trailer. It offers a loading deck measuring 8,420 × 2,110 mm, an unladen weight of just 840 kg and a payload capacity of up to 2,660 kg, with a maximum authorised mass of 3,500 kg.
This is a proven two-car transport trailer valued by professional vehicle transport operators. Its main advantage is the excellent balance between loading deck length, unladen weight, payload capacity, structural rigidity, durability and purchase price.
We consider a loading width of 2,110 mm sufficient for the vast majority of passenger cars. Making the trailer unnecessarily wider would increase its weight and reduce manoeuvrability. With an overall trailer length of almost 10 metres, every additional centimetre of width matters when manoeuvring through narrow streets, gateways or car parks.
The long frame achieves excellent rigidity through massive aluminium C-section longitudinal beams combined with the fully perforated loading deck. Rear support legs are included as standard equipment and help reduce structural stress when loading and unloading vehicles.
When transporting two vehicles, their combined weight, dimensions, correct load distribution and secure restraint must always be verified.
Custom-Built GROMEX Trailers – Individual Lengths and Widths up to 2,400 mm
GROMEX aluminium car transport trailers can also be manufactured to custom dimensions, including loading deck widths of up to 2,400 mm. Custom-built versions are suitable for transporting specialised vehicles, larger machinery or other loads with unusual dimensions.
At PKtechnik Trailers, however, we recommend carefully considering whether oversized dimensions are genuinely necessary. A longer and wider structure generally means higher unladen weight, lower payload capacity and reduced manoeuvrability. For most passenger cars and commercial vehicles, a loading width of approximately 2,100 mm is sufficient. We recommend wider versions where they provide a genuine operational advantage or are necessary for the intended load.
Standard Dimensions – An Advantage When Reselling Your Trailer
Standard GROMEX trailer dimensions also offer advantages when the trailer is eventually resold. Versatile lengths and widths meet the needs of a wider range of buyers, making such trailers generally easier to sell on the used trailer market. Even after many years of professional use, a high-quality car transporter with standard dimensions may retain an attractive residual value. Finding a suitable buyer for a custom-built trailer can be more difficult.
A specially extended or widened loading deck may be ideal for a particular application but could limit the number of potential buyers when the vehicle fleet is replaced. We therefore consider not only a trailer's immediate purpose but also its long-term versatility and resale potential.
GROMEX All-Aluminium Construction – Massive C-Section Beams and a Rigid Loading Deck
The foundation of every GROMEX car transporter is a robust all-aluminium frame consisting of two massive C-section longitudinal beams. This design combines low unladen weight with high strength and a long service life in professional operation.
A key structural component is the fully perforated aluminium loading deck, which contributes to the overall rigidity of the trailer and reduces unwanted structural twisting. The securing openings are additionally reinforced with stainless steel inserts, helping protect their edges against damage when securing transported vehicles.
Over more than 20 years of experience, thousands of trailers sold and more than 1,000 GROMEX car transport trailers delivered, we have not yet had to deal with a fracture of the frame or any of its main structural components. Our practical experience therefore challenges the common assumption that aluminium trailers are inherently less durable than steel trailers. With the permitted load limits observed, correct operation and regular maintenance, the robust all-aluminium GROMEX construction has proven itself even in demanding professional use.
Three AL-KO Axles, 10-Inch Wheels and a Low Loading Deck
GROMEX three-axle car transport trailers are equipped with three braked AL-KO axles, distributing the load across six wheels. At PKtechnik Trailers, we prefer versions fitted with 10-inch wheels and 195/55 R10 tyres. For regular professional vehicle transport, we recommend high-quality tyres from established manufacturers rather than choosing solely on the basis of the lowest purchase price. Tyre quality, correct inflation pressure and sufficient load capacity are essential for tyre life and operational safety.
Thanks to the low chassis design, the loading deck sits approximately 600 mm above the road surface. The low centre of gravity contributes to towing stability, while the favourable loading angle makes it easier to load vehicles.
Safe operation depends on correct load distribution, compliance with the permitted nose weight and regular checks of tyre pressure, brakes and chassis components.
Axle Shock Absorbers – Recommended Equipment for Professional Transport Operators
For GROMEX three-axle car transport trailers, we recommend fitting optional axle shock absorbers. Their benefits are particularly noticeable when carrying heavy vehicles and when crossing bridge expansion joints, transverse road irregularities, bumps or ruts.
At higher travelling speeds, for example around 100 km/h where legally permitted, road irregularities can cause unwanted movements of the towing combination. Shock absorbers help reduce these oscillations and improve ride comfort. However, they do not replace correct load distribution or appropriate driving techniques.
Rear Support Legs – Protecting the Trailer When Loading Heavy Vehicles
When loading heavy vehicles, considerable leverage forces act on the rear of the trailer, potentially placing excessive loads on the rearmost axle and the overrun braking system. Repeated overloading may contribute to increased wear of the guide bushes in the overrun coupling mechanism and other chassis or frame components.
We therefore recommend rear support legs particularly for trailers with loading decks longer than 5 metres and when loading vehicles weighing more than 2,000 kg. They are available as optional equipment on the L5.2 and L6.1 models, while the GROMEX L8.5 includes them as standard.
Front Crossover Ramps – Loading Without Uncoupling the Trailer
For professional vehicle transport operators, we also offer front crossover ramps that allow vehicles to move between the trailer and the vehicle transport body of the towing vehicle. With a correctly equipped and structurally compatible combination, the trailer does not need to be uncoupled for every loading or unloading operation. Vehicles can be driven across the entire transport combination, significantly speeding up the process.
Vehicle Overhang and Car Transport Regulations in Germany
Germany is one of the most important European destinations for professional vehicle transport operators. When choosing a car transporter, not only the loading deck length but also the possibility of safely positioning a vehicle with a legally permitted body overhang must be considered.
Under Section 22 of the German Road Traffic Regulations (Straßenverkehrs-Ordnung, StVO), a load may generally extend up to 1.5 metres beyond the rear of a vehicle. For journeys covering a distance of no more than 100 km, a rear overhang of up to 3 metres may be permitted under the applicable conditions. A load extending more than 1 metre beyond the rear reflectors must be marked in the prescribed manner.
The permitted overhang is assessed relative to the relevant outer boundary of the vehicle, not automatically from the end of the loading deck itself. Correct weight distribution, permitted axle and nose loads, sufficient turning clearance and all other dimensional requirements must also be observed.
For international transport, the regulations of every country along the route must be respected. German limits cannot automatically be treated as uniform rules throughout the European Union.
VDI 2700 Blatt 8.1 Certification, Vehicle Securing and Optional Equipment
All GROMEX car transport trailers are certified in accordance with the German VDI 2700 Blatt 8.1 guideline for the safe securing of vehicles during transport. This certification is particularly important for professional transport operators working in Germany and other European countries.
The perforated aluminium loading deck with reinforced securing openings allows the use of suitable lashing systems for safely securing transported vehicles.
