AL-KO 1005 mm breakaway cable for 2.8VB overrun couplings

The genuine AL-KO breakaway cable 209385 is a safety-critical component of a trailer braking system. It is designed for the handbrake lever of selected AL-KO overrun couplings, particularly the 2.8VB / 2.8VB/1-C series.

The cable is also used on selected Brian James Trailers fitted with the corresponding AL-KO overrun coupling.

Function of the breakaway cable

The breakaway cable is connected to the trailer handbrake lever. If the trailer becomes unintentionally detached from the towing vehicle while travelling, the cable pulls the handbrake lever and activates the trailer's mechanical braking system.

Its purpose is therefore not to keep a detached trailer connected to the towing vehicle, but to activate the trailer braking system if the trailer separates from the towing vehicle.

Original AL-KO 2.8VB application

Original AL-KO documentation lists breakaway cable 209385 directly as a separate replacement part for the handbrake lever of several versions of the 2.8VB/1-C overrun coupling, including variants equipped with the AL-KO AK 351 coupling head and AKS 3504 stabiliser coupling.

The same cable part number appears in several AL-KO ETI assemblies. When selecting the correct replacement part, we therefore recommend checking primarily the genuine part number 209385 and the exact version of the overrun coupling.

AL-KO 209385 and newer versions

Part number 209385 is an original AL-KO reference used with a number of overrun coupling assemblies. Newer AL-KO assemblies may also use different versions of breakaway cables with different genuine part numbers.

When replacing the original cable, we therefore recommend comparing not only its length but especially the attachment method, end fittings and genuine part number.

Inspection and replacement of the breakaway cable

The breakaway cable is a safety-critical component of a braked trailer. We recommend regularly checking the condition of the steel cable, protective covering, end fittings and its attachment to the handbrake lever.

A damaged, deformed, heavily corroded or frayed cable should be replaced immediately. After installation, check that the cable can correctly operate the handbrake lever if the trailer becomes detached and that it is routed in a way that does not restrict its function.
